Silver Blitz Studio was founded in 2012. The studio aims to promote wet plate collodion art and culture. By integrating fine art photography, education, and exhibitions, we hope the public can have more opportunities to participate and learn about this Victorian era photography technique.
“Silver” means silver nitrate, which is an irreplaceable photosensitive material for wet collodion photos. “Blitz” means flash in German. We use light to paint on the plate, instead of on the canvas. Each silver plate is handmade in the darkroom with the picture rendered on metal/glass. Every image is completely unique. The studio uses Victorian grand format camera for shooting, in order to mimic the atmosphere of the old time.

What is wet collodion photography?
The wet collodion photography process was discovered and pronounced at 1851 by the British sculptor, Frederick Scott Archer (1813-1857). The wet collodion on glass negatives are highly praised for its’ high resolution details with sensitivity to wide spectrum of available light. The tactile and material values of this earliest form of photography is a contrast with the immaterial culture of the digital revolution. These glass negatives have a high collection value nowadays for museums and prestigious connoisseurs around the world.
